Bike Science Bristol offer two different levels of performance testing. Bike Science also specialise in the supply, installation and usage advice of a range of power meters from Rotor, Garmin and Quarq. Each custom purchasing a power meter from Bike Science Bristol will receive a Level 2 performance test FREE OF CHARGE in order to accurately determine initial training zones to ensure you get the most benefit from using your power meter.

Performance testing not only applies to riders who race (or aspire to race). Knowing the correct intensity to ride at can allow any rider to train towards their goals in a shorter period of time, and make larger improvements as they do so.

Level 1 Performance Ramp Test

Our level one test gives an indication of a riders maximum ability to produce power using their aerobic system. From this we can estimate a riders thresholds and training zones.

The level 1 perfomance test uses a ramp test to calculate your Maximum Aerobic Power. The ramp test begins at a very low intensity, and incrementally increases in power until failure. From this we will estimate training zones in terms of both power and heart rate.

The results include

  • Maximum Aerobic Power (MAP)
  • Power training zones (calculated as a percentage of MAP)
  • Heart rate training zones (calculated as a percentage of MAP)
  • Advice on the use of HR and power zones to train more effectively towards your goals
  • Includes Basic written report of your results, training zones and training advice
  • Appointment Time - 1hr - Price £49.99

Level 2 Performance Lactate Ramp Test

A more accurate and reliable option is our level 2 test which measures blood lactate concentration. Blood lactate concentration is a direct way of measuring how much of the power being produced at the pedals is coming from aerobic or anaerobic sources - thus how much oxygen is reaching your working muscles.

We use blood lactate concentration testing as it provides direct measurement of metabolic processes to a greater degree of accuracy than other systems which sample expired gasses. Testing small, finger-prick blood samples is also much easier to control than testing gasses or venous blood. This ensures greater accuracy, repeatability and reliability.

Level 2 Performance testing- Depending on your sporting history and training background, your training zones may not conform to a basic model of percentages of maximum. The protocol for this test will take you through a ramp test, measuring blood lactate concentration and heart rate at incrementally increasing power levels. The ramp test begins at a very low intensity, and increases in power until failure.

The results include

  • Maximum Aerobic Power (MAP)
  • Aerobic threshold
  • Anaerobic threshold
  • Accurate power training zones calculated from lactate values
  • Accurate heart rate training zones calculated from lactate values
  • Advice on the use of HR and power zones to train more effectively towards your goals
  • Includes detailed written report of your results, training zones and training advice
  • Appointment Time - 90mins
  • Price £79.99
  • Block of 4 tests - £249.99 (contact us to discuss purchase of a block of tests)
  • For best results we would recommend re-testing at least every three months such that the block of 4 tests would represent one years worth of testing
